Cheers, Lumi

Update

During my Thursday set at Fracture I gave out a link for a free copy of the Regrets & Brunettes album At Night You Love Me. I later realized my mistake. The code was good for just one download. The band has since sent me a few more codes. I have at the moment 7 more for the asking. Drop me an email at ennuiclip@gmail.com and I'll send you one.
Also, since most of us Fracturelings seem to have an awesomely irreverent sense of humor, I'm sharing this site with you that I've recently been cracking the hell up over. http://www.normalbobsmith.com/

Enjoy! - Ennui

Grot The Third!

All good things come to an end, especially when they're Dell power supplies. I guess then, that the word "good" really doesn't apply. Ok. Let me start this over.

All things come to an end, especially when Dell manufactures them. The Grotbox's power supply fan ingested some sort of small mammal or bit of "case fur" and met its end. Being a Dell, it had a proprietary power supply that I couldn't replace without spending money. Fortunately, I am a resourceful techfae, so I replaced the ailing Dell machine with (here's the fantastically clever part) another ailing Dell machine. It's got a power supply that is nonstandard, and yet refreshingly incompatible with Grot The Second's mainboard.

Screwy, ain't it?

Anyhow, the copious waste heat from the Pentium 4 provides an ideal microclimate for jade plants and freezing faeries alike.

Until it blows up again. Don't fret, though - I've got a pile of Dell machines to burn through.

Weeeeeee're back, baby!

...at least, we are for the next 30 days. I could say more, but the SPA might be listening. Instead, I'm going to think about lizards, and Tony Danza, and Subarus.

Yeah. That's the stuff.

Aaaanyhow, those of you who have missed the hourly station IDs and the velvety output from the L2 Ultramaximizer and a copy of You Wah Shock! can listen again. Classic Grotbox goodness is back, at least for a little while.

Those of you who have no idea what I've just said (and that may be the lot of you) can just enjoy our 24/7 stream. It'll be extra-good for the next month. I promise.

Thanks to Priki for the photo!

Summery sets from Pink, with love.

The Grotbox is dead!

Long live the Grotbox!

Without going into too much detail, our copy of SAM Broadcaster (bloated, kludgy, lovable mess that it is) is pinin' for the fjords.

Elements of the Beta Bates Software Brigade and Tony Danza for a Brighter Tomorrow are researching solutions.

In the meantime, there will still be Fracture Radio, but our hourly station IDs will be silent.

(Alas, I lost the attribution to the fine CC licensed pic I used here. Just that kinda night, I suppose...)

(Edit - 9:14pm)

Does anyone know of a program comparable to SAM Broadcaster that's freeware? I need something capable of heavy automation, that can use DX effects or Winamp-flavored DSP fx, and can dynamically modify the playlist so we can have our beloved station IDs back. If anyone knows anything, or has a friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend that might, please infospew me. Thanks, gang.

This post is the size of Tokyo

So, I was irresponsible last time, and didnt post my set. I can hear you now- "why foley?? why would you DO THIS TO ME??"

Well, my friend, to make up for it, I have made giant mp3 files, zipped them up, sent to sendspace, and said 1000 hail whatevers.

So without further ado, I give you my last two sets. The files contain one loooong file, but you can request individual tracks and, while I would neeever do aaanything illegal, some kind of "arrangement" might be hypothetically reached. You know, in theory.

A Xax Set!

Yeah, I knows its been a bit since I posted - but I was prodded to put up this list from the previous' nights efforts - so I hope you all enjoy!

After a couple of straight -technoy mix sets I wanted to go for a bit of a more melodic, out there vibe, with some interesting new pieces - so, lo! The order might not be perfect because traktor kind of fudged it tho

Efdemin -Acid Bells (Martyn's Bittersweet Mix)
Ben Watt - Guinea Pig (Dj Koze Remix)
The Field - The More That I Do (Foals XIII Remix)
Matias Aguayo - Bo Jack (Vocal Version)
Legowelt - Police 303

Sorry its a short one, but tech difficulties kinda beset upon me!

Rieko's GOA/Psytrance Set

This set was a tour of a few GOA Trance/Psytrance subgenres, since there were a few questions about the genres the prior week. I'm not a real expert on categories, so it's just a rough tour, and I'm sure a lot of this could generate pages of debate.

GOA Trance: GOA Trance is named that way because it emerged from groups of hippies (LOL) playing music for each other in GOA, India, a place where they used to congregate as a retreat from society. For me, GOA sounds are dreamy, often other poeple describe them as 'organic'. You ride along with to multiple layers of cascading, pulsing, and meandering synthesizers. The beats set the pace, but aren't pronounced. There are now many subgenres of GOA also, but I'm just sticking with the standard.

1. Astral Project - "Amen"
2. Ethereal - "Moondawn"
3. Shakta - "Ten Times Around the Sun"

Psychedelic Trance: Psychedelic Trance evolved from GOA Trance. The sound is more electronic, and progresses through different varieties of sounds, whereas GOA tends to use layers of similar 'squelches'. Psytrance also has a greater emphasis on the beats.

4. Silicon Sound - "Inner Space"

Morning Full On: A popular subgenre of Psytrance emerged as Psy's popularity grew. Morning Full On focused on catchy, uplifting melodies, drawing a bit of influence from popular club music. There's often a clean synthesizer or an angelic background tone.

5. Protoculture - "Circadians"

Full On: Normal Full On Psytrance focuses on high energy, exciting beats. Full On and Morning Full On are often intertwined, much of both having developed in Israel. Much of Electronic Dance Music runs on 4/4 beats, and Full On frequently squeezes in more base pulses between each beat to make the music seem more rapid and intense.

6. Sesto Sento - "Disconnecting"
7. Psywalker - "Chemical Trance"
8. Xerox & Illumination - "The Vision"
9. Save the Robot - "Robotz"

Night Full On: Night Full On later emerged as an opposite of morning full on (I suppose when it didn't feel appropriate to play happy angelic tunes during late night raves). The tunes are a bit faster, and the melodies are darker and more sinister.

10. Menog - "Digital Feelings"
11. Neuromotor - "Android from Mars"
12. Iron Madness - "Dinak Productions"

Darkpsy (is my personal favorite!): Darkpsy is even faster, but it doesn't always aim to be intense. Rather frequently attempts to immerse you in hypnotic sounds, similar to GOA Trance. There is far less, if any, melodies in DarkPsy, but the tunes get a dose of Industrial influence with sampling and heavy distortion. The sounds are very dense, with the goal of invoking a variety of tones: eerieness, mechanical hollowness, sinister, spooky forests, etc. Much of Darkpsy developed in Russia.

13. Karmazon - "The calling"
14. CPC - "Piter 25"
15. Horror Place - "Empty Space"
16. Kindzadza - "Superstrings"

Grotbox adjustments...

Howdy, gang! I've just finished fixing a bunch of database irregularities on the Grotbox. The master record of what has been played, how many times a song has been played, and whether or not I liked it suffered a blowout. To our two regular listeners, I apologize for the hardcore metal/MF Doom/Free Jazz blowout of the last 2 days that resulted.

To this end, I just spent the last 4 hours hand weighting everything in the new database. Expressing an opinion on a song on a 1-100 scale, at a rate of 2000 songs an hour, is not an experience I'd like to repeat again any time soon. I do it out of love, and for our 2 brave listeners. (Hi, guys!) Anyhow, somewhat normal service has been restored, though some fine-tuning will occur over the next month.

I'd write a few more paragraphs, but my eyes hurt, and my printer just printed... something.

(and thanks to shankool007 for the image!)

The Theremin Fractured

Beta got me a theremin kit for my birthday, and I've been gleaning music featuring the instrument. (The theremin is an early electronic instrument, invented in the 1920s, that is played by waving your hands by a volume-controlling antenna and a pitch-controlling antenna. It's all portamento and glissando and scifi wooo.) Hence my theme for the week.

Hey gang!

Beta here. I've been hunkered down in my office making insane station IDs, drippy dub wanks and generally gnawing on all the damnned iguanas in here. Little monsters are completely full of poison! I can smell them out there, warming themselves under my mixer, doing unspeakable things to my preamp, and fixing their beady little eyes on me.

Bastards!

Anyhow, I suppose that's none of your concern, is it?

If you're reading this, you're most likely staff, and I'd like to take the time to thank each and every one of you for not only the effort you put in, but for the life and fun you bring with you. It is a glorious thing. If I had 2 drinks in me, I'd tell you I looooooved you, then stumble a bit and tell you a sordid story about some past bit of debauchery.

Fracture is my home, and we are all family. Much loooove.

Xaxo's April 28 Setlist - Cut Fizz

Hey everyone! Just posting the info from my set from tuesday.

Technically its saved, but I dont really have a place to upload the thing, or else I might - is that appealing? Feedback is goods!

Otherwise, this is somewhat of a mix between new, idm, glitch and..the thumpy grab bag I usually tote around! Not really too much framework to this one. It does contain a lot of Karin Dreijer Andersson , for no real reason tho.

Christian Fennesz & Ryuichi Sakamoto - Amorph [my little ambient leadin part]
Fever Ray - When I Grow Up
Boards of Canada - Aquarius
Hood - The Lost You
Prefuse 73 - Nuno

Rieko's April 28th Set List - Spring

Hi everyone! I think it's great having a blog for Fracture!! I'll post my set list and also talk a bit about how the set is themed. I won't do this often, because I don't think knowing (or realizing) the theme or these details is very important, but I like my sets to follow some sort of emotional story, and i usually use a theme to bring that about. ^^

The theme of this set was the emergence of spring from winter. Much (all?) of the set is Trance. It begins with two songs about rain, both old Vocal Trance Songs:

1. Stunt - "Raindrops"
2. NRC - "Here Comes The Rain"

Then a cold, Trance song...

3. Arnej feat. 8 Wonders - "People Never Change" (original mix)

Then two Progressive Trance songs...

4. Ski Fi - "Waverange"
5. Reefer Decree - "Nightvision"

Then three, chilling, Tech Trance songs:

6. Opsy - "Her Ghost in the Fog"
7. Leon Bolier - "10PM" (subsphere chillout remix)
8. Ascii Disko - "Tonite"

Then three, gentle, but radiant Vocal Trance songs (as I was playing this, I realized I could have inserted a better transition here xD):

9. Blake Jarrell - "Punta Del Este" (beach mix)
10. Solar Stone - "Seven Cities" (Armin Van Buuren Vocal Mix)
11. Armin Van Buuren feat. Racoon - "Love You More" (original mix)

Then closes out with three more energetic and radiant Trance songs:

12. Akesson - "Perfect Blue"
13. Andy Blueman - "Nyctalopia"
14. Bissen - "Exhale" (Sean Tyas remix)

Hope you enjoyed!!

Sample Fracturechat and Av Variety

Being a Hostess at Fracture, I will leave the more musically themed posts to the DJs. I love the avatar expression and the fun, intelligent and loving discussion that happens when Fractuelings gather.

Pictured here are Lehn, Pinkfeather, Keris, Udge and myself as we appeared yesterday to illustrate avatar expression.

I’m providing a sample of a few conversations from yesterday’s event, a mere taste of the flavor of Fracturechat.

1) I rezzed in the middle of a discussion of things to do with Dokken:

Beta Bates does coke with Dokken
Pinkfeather Heron fights Freddy Krueger with Dokken
Noctis Oh eats shredded wheat with Dokken

2) Sci-Fi geekery happens at Fracture.

Foley Appletor: actually I think R2D2 is more suited for doing Brazillian Punk Rock standards
Peridot Winkler: What is C3PO's gig?
Trinity Halberstadt: c3po with the phat rhymes, yo :)

3) The inevitable food conversation:

Pinkfeather Heron: unfortunately, I cannae get to avocado right now unless I walk :<
Foley Appletor: half the fun is the chase, but eating them is pretty good too
Noctis Oh: they're slippery buggers
Udge Watanabe: they're nearly as wily as lichen.
Pinkfeather Heron imagines avocados rolling through the streets like tumbleweed
Noctis Oh imagines them bouncing and boinging

There were also discussions of contaminated water, La Jolla's controversial seals, what instruments we played in High School, gender transitioning, and much much more.

Noctis' Klassical Set 25 April 2009

Well, helllooo, Fractureblogfolk.

Thanks to Linden for riding herd on this blogproject, and to Beta for establishing it. And Fracture, of course. . . I look forward to much musical postmayhem, and deep thoughts, and many bacon references.

For now, I'll follow Sen's lead and post my playlist for today. I did a tour of covers of classical musics, covering a lot of the past century. I started with Clara Rockmore on theremin, moved through a swing and klezmer Nutcracker trio of tunes, then hit surf, funk, psychedelic rock, punk, metal, goth/industrial, new wave, dance mash, glitch, and ended with a lovely track from the Tettix Rites of Spring.

Clara Rockmore--Saint Saens: The Swan
Duke Ellington--Sugar Rum Cherry
David Berger & The Sultans of Swing--Danse of the Floreadores
Shirim--Dance of the Latkes Queens
Takeshi Terauchi & The Bunnies--Hungarian Dance No. 5
Walter Murphy--A Fifth of Beethoven
White Lightning--William Tell Overture
Electric Light Orchestra--In the Hall of the Mountain King
The Adicts--Ode to Joy
Mysterious Noise--Toccata
Reliquary--Lakme
The Art of Noise--Rapt: In the Evening Air
Macolm McLaren & The Bootzilla Orchestra--House of the Blue Danube
A plus D--Beethoven's Fifth Gold Digger
Ari Inkilainen--Satie's World Gymnopedie
Tettix--Sacrifical Dance

Twas a lovely Fracture event, with sets by Pink, Beta, and Foley, each one delicious.

Come listen inworld next time! http://slurl.com/secondlife/Ars%20Lunga/125/175/151
